The Cost of Remedial Education in Higher Education

National Centerfor Developmental Education Appalachian State University Boone, NC 28608 ABSTRACT: This study examines the literature regarding the cost of delivering postsecondary remedial education. Five studies are examined which offer statewide and national estimates of these costs. The studies are viewed in light of their method ology, findings, and limitations. The dis cussion also offers insight into the limited amount of research available on this topic, the considerable difficulties involved in collecting this kind of information, and the opposing philosophies and variations of the interpretation of available data.
